Kids’ app of the week: Just Going to the Dentist

February 19, 2013

I could not have discovered this app at a better time! I’m starting to make the first plans and moves to take my toddler to the dentist for his first checkup, and I’ve been wondering how to do it (aside from explaining, demonstration and perhaps a Lego bribe incentive.

Enter Just Going to the Dentist, an interactive story by Mercer Mayer. It’s part of the Little Critter stories, which deal with big issues and fears about growing up (for example bullying, bad dreams and monsters, among dozens more).

This story is engaging and fun, and has three options: “read it myself”, “read to me”, or “auto play” (plays like a movie, with pages being read and turned). There’s also a “record your own voice” option. As the story is read, you can touch words and pictures, and the word is said aloud.

There is also a fun “find the creature” mini game that kids can play, and with such great images, this app is optimised for retina displays.

It’s an enjoyable story, and will hopefully ease your little ones’ fears and answer any questions they have about visiting the dentist (could be good for scared adults too 🙂 )

Just Going to the Dentist is available for all IOS devices, and is $1.99. I think it’s great for kids between the ages of two and five – the different story options mean they can read the book, or have it read to them.
