The 28 days are up – how we found the Kiehl’s #ChangeYourSkin challenge

So after 28 days of using Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery Concentrate as part of the #ChangeYourSkin campaign, here’s what I and the five trialists thought in Q&A format, and whether the product’s promises were indeed.

In case you missed them, we documented parts of the challenge in two other posts here and here. Just in case you can’t spot the differences, the “before” pictures are on the top, the “after” beneath them.

Me

How does your skin feel after 28 days?

Much softer, and a little brighter. Less “grey”

– Did anyone notice a change in your skin, or comment on it?

No, they didn’t.

– What were your expectations in the beginning, and do you think that your expectations were fulfilled?

I expected that the product would make my skin look brighter and a bit healthier (and “glowier”), and those expectations were definitely met. I have other issues like pigmentation, undereye rings and mild acne which I wish something in a bottle could treat, but I don’t think that’s going to be the case. I have opted to go for treatments (like peels and laser at Laserderm) to treat those issues.

– Would you buy this for yourself?

Yes, definitely.

– Would you recommend it to a friend?

Yes.

– Do you think that lifestyle (e.g. stress, drinking water, sleep) has something to do with your skin, and could have played a part in the results?

Most definitely. Regardless of products I use, more sleep and water will always make my skin look better.

– How would you describe the product in five words?

Great-smelling, softening, pampering, brightening.

– How does your skin feel after 28 days?

My skin feels softer and the only other word I can think of is “fresher”. I have also found that it feels less oily at the end of the day than it previously felt.

– Did anyone notice a change in your skin, or comment on it?

No. don’t count my husband cos he knew I was using something new and was expecting to see a difference so he’s been “looking” to see if he could see a difference. He reckons that my frown lines on my forehead look better.

– What were your expectations in the beginning, and do you think that your expectations were fulfilled?

My expectations were that I was going to be totally wrinkle free, black ring free and frown lines on the forehead free. Rather high and if I’m honest probably completely unrealistic. That said I do find that my “lines” are less pronounced and my skin feels fresher. I did expect that people other than my husband would notice a difference which they haven’t.

– Would you buy this for yourself?

I would. BUT. It would most definitely depend on the price. I am not a pay a fortune for skin product kind of girl, so if it was reasonably priced (between R399 and R699) I would buy it especially since one bottle seems to last for months.

(Note from Tanya: The product retails for around R550)

– Would you recommend it to a friend?

I have a friend who will pay the earth for skin care products, I have already recommended it to her (I am unsure how much it costs) and would probably reccommend it to more friends who were looking to change their skin.

– Do you think that lifestyle (e.g. stress, drinking water, sleep) has something to do with your skin, and could have played a part in the results?

Most definitely. I broke out about a week into the challenge but I was busy moving house and had a sick child in hospital so don’t necessarily attribute the break out to the product at all. I also think that if I hadn’t been so stressed, that my results might have been slightly better.

– How would you describe the product in five words?

Fragrant (love this product’s smell)

Calming (the application technique calms me)

Luxurious (the texture)

Refreshing (the way my skin feels in the morning)

Permeable (absorbs really nicely)

– How does your skin feel after 28 days?

I was skeptical but at first but when I really think about it I have to be honest, there has definitely been a change. When I think of how dry my skin is in the Joburg winter and the fact that I don’t even feel like I need a day moisturiser at the moment (although I still do use one) it’s obvious that there’s a new suppleness to my skin.

– Did anyone notice a change in your skin, or comment on it?

No, ‘fraid not

– What were your expectations in the beginning, and do you think that your expectations were fulfilled?

I think I was expecting magic. I’m generally very lucky with my skin as it is so I guess there wasn’t toooo much to ‘fix’. I was a little disappointed initially with the lack of any noticeable difference, but as I said above, there definitely is more moisture in my skin, and that, in this climate, is already a win. Miracle? Maybe not so much.

– Would you buy this for yourself?

Ummm I don’t think so. I do tend to stick with the cheaper versions of everything when it comes to my skin. And having said that I realise how silly it sounds. My friend made a comment the other day which is so true – ‘You only get one skin for your whole life and you have to wear it every day so why don’t we spend as much money on it as we do on clothes and shoes?’ Perhaps I need to re-think my skincare strategy.

– Would you recommend it to a friend?

Yes I think so. Although skin care is so personal I tend to be very wary of recommending skin care products. I definitely believe people need to try it out for themselves though.

– Do you think that lifestyle (e.g. stress, drinking water, sleep) has something to do with your skin, and could have played a part in the results?

I’m sure it’s possible – your life definitely shows on your skin. Personally I don’t know that I got less/more sleep or drank any less water than usually do, however I did start a new job in June and I think it’s quite possible that you underestimate the toll it takes to get to know new people, clients, processes and so on. Not that I think I necessarily had a negative result, just perhaps not the most fabulous.

– How would you describe the product in five words?

I want to bath in it (that’s 6 but still)

– How does your skin feel after 28 days?

Supple, soft and unaffected by the winter dryness.

– Did anyone notice a change in your skin, or comment on it?

My boyfriend and a few friends. I’m not sure if it’s only because they were aware of the Kiehl’s challenge and took a closer look!

– What were your expectations in the beginning, and do you think that your expectations were fulfilled?

I think we all started off with really high hopes – reduced crow feet, reduced red undertones and getting rid of dry spots. The realistic hope of getting rid of dryness worked. The other two probably can’t be fixed by cosmetic products…

– Would you buy this for yourself?

Absolutely.

– Would you recommend it to a friend?

Yes, I already have.

– Do you think that lifestyle (e.g. stress, drinking water, sleep) has something to do with your skin, and could have played a part in the results?

Yes, definitely.

– How would you describe the product in five words?

Miracle serum that actually works. (Kinda lame, but true…)

– How does your skin feel after 28 days?

The photos may not show how much change there has been – my skin just feels better to the touch…”bouncier” seems the best word to describe it. It’s also less dry and dull.

Did anyone notice a change in your skin, or comment on it?

Yes. A new friend commented that I was lucky to have such good skin. My skin has never been something anyone has particularly complimented me on, so I was chuffed!

What were your expectations in the beginning, and do you think that your expectations were fulfilled?

To be honest I didn’t expect there to be much change, so my expectations were exceeded.

Would you buy this for yourself?

Yes I definitely would.

Would you recommend it to a friend?

Yes.

– Do you think that lifestyle (e.g. stress, drinking water, sleep) has something to do with your skin, and could have played a part in the results?

I do think that lifestyle plays a huge part in your skin’s appearance, as well as genetics. But in this instance I’ve actually had a very stressful 28 days, which has involved looking after my 3 month old baby (and the subsequent lack of sleep that comes along with this), amongst other things. The fact that there has been a positive change amidst all this stress is pretty amazing.

– How would you describe the product in five words?

Revitalising and a little miraculous.

– How does your skin feel after 28 days?

My skin feels very clear and bright.

– Did anyone notice a change in your skin, or comment on it?

Nope. Unfortunately. But that doesn’t mean it didn’t happen!

– What were your expectations in the beginning, and do you think that your expectations were fulfilled?

I had low expectations as I think that cosmetics often overstate their benefits and very rarely fulfill their hype. Because I had low expectations, I was pleasantly surprised by the positive changes.

– Would you buy this for yourself?

I probably wouldn’t because the change wasn’t dramatic enough and there were aspects that didn’t suit my skin completely.

– Would you recommend it to a friend?

Yes I would for softening and brightening.

– Do you think that lifestyle (e.g. stress, drinking water, sleep) has something to do with your skin, and could have played a part in the results?

Perhaps… But I think that my skin was fairly consistent through the process despite lack of sleep and travelling. It did break out the first week of using the product which is an abnormal response for me so I deduce that in some respects, the product was a bit too active for me… So I avoided using it on the breakout areas like under the chin. I liked the smell at first but over time, liked it less I don;t know why. I feel that because my skin is dry, I would have liked it to be slightly more hydrating.

How would you describe the product in five words?

Brightening/softening product for erratic use.
