Sweet dreams are made of these – the Frankie Beans maternity pillow

August 4, 2016

Now that I'm in my third trimester, it feels that turning around in bed is like doing a 20-point turn, and that by the time I get comfortable in bed, it's time to get up to go to the loo for yet another time.

So it was a relief to be contacted by Frankie Beans, manufacturers of pretty pregnancy pillows, asking if I'd like to try out their product. I mean, how could I say no to something that potentially offered comfort, support and easier rolling over (and less partner disturbance, according to the website – big bonus!).

I've generally stayed away from maternity pillows as I thought they were just another unnecessary pregnancy product, and quite a frumpy one at that. I've been pleasantly surprised though – Frankie Bean pillows are anything but frumpy (you can choose from four lovely fabrics), and I'm a lot more comfortable while settling in for the night, and it's now as indispensable in my life as my Gaviscon. Which is saying a lot. It's also hypoallergenic and machine washable.

Each pillow costs R450, and you can buy one online here.

What's more, it can be used for when baby is born. Looking for a great comfortable pillow for yourself, or something awesome for a baby shower gift? Then try this. I asked Tonia Allen, owner of Frankie Beans, a few questions about the product as I wanted to learn a bit more, plus I love it when moms come up with great products/businesses.

The pillow looks a bit different from others. What makes it unique?

Having just had a baby, I realised that there was a gap in the market for a pillow that provided added support to the back, hips, pelvis and most importantly the growing tummy all at the same time.

It's important to be as comfortable as possible and I struggled to find a pillow that provided that comfort. Looking at the pillows that were available and taking in mind with what I needed when I was pregnant, my husband and I designed the Frankie Beans maternity pillow.

The pillow is unique in that the design allows for support for both back and tummy at the same time, but most importantly, you don’t have to move the pillow in your bed when you turn at night. You simply leave it in position and just turn over to have the same support both ways.

Whereas the other pillows are large and bulky – waking up your partner as you re shuffle it, this is compact but efficient. The Frankie Beans Maternity Pillow can also be used by placing one half between your knees and the other half under your tummy.

This pillow is also unique in that the inner ‘stuffing’ is a ball fibre, thousands of tiny polyester fibre balls which create a soft and free flowing, “down- like” comfort with softness and comfort. It does not clump together like the other fibres do. This ball fibre is hypoallergenic as well as mite and mould free. The outer casing is made of 100% cotton, ensuring that we provide as much comfort as possible.

How can it be used once the baby is born?

  • When your baby has arrived it can be rested on this pillow to allow ease of comfort to you both while feeding. By placing the pillow on your lap or in your arms, it ensures both you and baby have optimum support, reducing the pressure on your arms and shoulders to support your baby’s weight.
  • Can be used as a support pillow to rest baby in while they sleep.
  • Moms often take the pillow to the hospital for the birth of baby to use as support in the hospital bed.
  • It’s also great for long drives, sitting at the desk, or air travel.
  • Moms even use it as a head rest in their feeding chair.

Why the name Frankie Beans?

My daughter was named Frances after her great grandmother, and we have nicknamed her Frankie. And obviously when we designed this pillow, it was just after the birth of Frankie, hence Frankie Bean.
