As the partner of CarseatFullstop, the carseat awareness campaign, Volvo is helping to reduce the chance of children being seriously injured in road accidents. Their range of highly rated – and tested – car seats is also part of Volvo's safety credo, and this week, they're giving away one fantastic seat here, in a size of your choice (you can choose from three).
The Volvo seats have been developed with Britax, who are the original developers of car seats and are rated as the safest seats in the world, which is great news if you're wanting the safest of the safe.
The range, protecting newborn infants to children around 10 years of age, includes and exclusively rear-facing child seat that can be used up to 25kg (between four and six years old). According to extensvie research, rear-facing child seats are five times safer than forward-facing seats.
What is Volvo's reason for advocating rear-facing seats until age six? Research says that a child's neck is weak and it is still growing, and the head is proportionately larger than that of an adult. When travelling rearward facing, incoming collision forces are spread across the back and head, thus reducing the load on the neck in a frontal impact, which is the most common and often the most dangerous type of collision.
In line with Volvo's commitment to the highest levels of safety, all seats have been crash tested by Volvo in actual cars (other seats are tested in simulators). I obviously haven't tested this claim, as this would mean crashing my car and uusing kids or dummies, but you can find out more about their years of research and their tests from Volvo directly.
What I can attest to, is that the infant seat, which is what I'll be using in a few weeks' time for my baby, is easy to carry (ie not too bulky and heavy) and simply to assemble. I'm practising the in/out manoevre in order to prevent tears later on (mostly from me, I imagine, if I can't buckle/install the thing properly).
It's good to know that the seats are free from specified allergy-forming substances. All covers are removable and can withstand the 40 degree cycle in the washing machine.
Here's more about the Volvo seats:
Infant seat (up to 13kg, valued at R4 012)
Infants up to one year of age travel safely in this rear-facing seat. Side wings help protect in a side impact, and you can easily adjust the padded headrest and five-point harness. There’s a canopy to block the sun, too. This infant seat is also easy to carry and can be used as a carrycot.
Convertible child seat (9-25 kg, valued at R4 012)
This advanced, flexible rearward-facing child seat is suitable for children aged 9 months to six years. It’s fitted using the car’s safety belt and is easily adjusted to help optimise comfort and safety.
Booster seat (15-36 kg, valued at R5 871)
Volvo’s booster seat helps position a child at the correct height for the safety belt and is designed to optimise side impact protection. The headrest and width adjust easily to enhance comfort, and the backrest can be reclined when your child wants to rest. The booster seat also has ISOFIX (no other booster seats do).
