There's a fantastic new local story app that is worth buying for its content alone. But there's another phenomenal reason to add it your iPad – every cent, after iTunes App Store royalties, goes towards Starfish, a charity that pulls strongly at my heart.
Starfish, an organisation that supports vulnerable and orphaned children affected by HIV and poverty in South Africa. Starfish helps more than 12 000 children a year so they can grow into happy young adults. Thanks to some of you readers, who have sponsored my running of the Comrades Marathon, we've been able to donate money to this brilliant organisation.
Starfish's app is The Starfish Story, an interactive tale that teaches kids that small deeds and actions can make a meaningful difference. It can be narrated or read on its own, making it suitable for kids from two to eight. There are also interactive "Easter eggs" such as lighting, and animals that come to life on the screen when they are clicked, or as the iPad is hugged, tapped or moved from side to side.
The app was developed and marketed for "free" by people who turned this into a project of the heart for a brilliant cause. This is just another reason to support all the work and love that went into the app's making.
The app costs R139.99 from the SA store, and for $8.99 from the US store.
