Lee Friedland is mom to Zac and one of the coolest Twitter moms, and before she leaves for Perth, here she shares her 12 things.
The best parenting advice I ever got was not to label myself as a certain type of parent. There is so much backlash over attachment parenting versus so called ‘detachment’ parenting. I was advised to do what works for me and my child. It is ok to pick and choose from different parenting styles in order to find your own groove.
The worst parenting advice I received was that ‘all babies cry, you are overreacting’. This is what I was told for 8 weeks until I reached breaking point with a constantly screaming newborn. Upon further investigation it was found that he had severe silent reflux and was a terribly colicky baby. Moms who haven’t experienced colic cant understand the anxiety it brings with it. I wish I had trusted my instincts sooner rather than put his screaming down to the fact all babies cry.
My favorite perfume at the moment is 212 VIP by Carolina Herrera. The scent is unbelievable, it has a slight heaviness to it, perfect for Autumn.
My favorite lipstick at the moment is MACs ‘Lickable’, a divine dark pink hue, perfect for adding a pop of colour to my dreary grey and black winter wardrobe.
My favourite skincare product at the moment is… Clarins moisture-rich body lotion. It keeps your skin beautifully hydrated, even in Joberg’s extremely dry winter climate.
In my nappy bag you will always find.. baby wipes, these are the most brilliant invention ever. Snacks, and the most brilliant Australian product Lucas’ pawpaw ointment, which takes care of nappy rash, burns, scrapes, bites, stings, and a myriad of other things.
In my cubbyhole you will always find… the Ed Jordan kids’ CD collection, sunglasses and thousands of petrol card slips.
In my handbag you will always find… tubs of DCT lip treatment, I actually cannot live without it. Pens, lipglosses, lists, chewing gum, and Zac’s Sophie le’giraffe in case he needs some entertaining in the Woolies queue.
In my fridge you will always find… Woolies yoghurt, raspberries, Coke Zero and lots of cheese.
My best baby buy is… definitely a toss up between my baby wrap which saved me during the early months when my son didn’t stop shrieking, and the family fix car seat base, this device is beyond genius, no struggling with the seatbelt when you take the car seating and out of the car, it simply attaches to base with no fuss at all. Both products are very highly recommended!
I want to remembered as a mom who… was abundantly loving. A mom who was always open and available. A mom that was always involved in my children’s day to day lives.
Before I was a mom I wish I had known… how overwhelming this first year of parenting would be . How I would find myself loving so fiercely, worrying so deeply, and most importantly how I would be struck by the absolute awe of the greatest blessing I could have ever imagined.
