I’m not sure why I’m so late in downloading Toontastic when it’s been on the “best-of” lists for a few years, plus has won some awards.

Toontastic is an app that allows kids to create their own animated films by choosing characters and scenes, moving them around, providing dialogue and even music. There is lots of opportunity for great storytelling and unleashed imaginations, and characters and scenes for all preferences (for example dinosaurs, princesses, pirates).

The cartoons then get recorded, kids can share their creations via ToonTube, Toontastic’s storytelling network.

Available for free on iOS

I love Toontastic as a therapist. A word of caution for those thinking of downloading. It is actually quite difficult to use effectively and the best way is to plan the story beforehand. I get most of the kids to write out their story or tell the story before we animate on Toontastic. A recent comment from one of my kids “I love doing stories like this; I wish I could always do them this way.”
