App of the week: Drawnimal (it uses paper, and teaches the alphabet too)

October 10, 2013

This might not be everyone’s cup of tea because it needs to be coupled with pen and paper, but it’s for this reason that I love this app. Drawnimal¬†teaches the alphabet by assigning each letter an animal, and then only giving the animal’s face. Place your tablet or phone on a piece of paper, and your child then has to draw the rest of the animal on paper. The app does suggest stuff to draw, such as tails, manes and ears, but your child can think out the box and do as they wish.

This app certainly isn’t a must-have, but it’s a nice-to-have, and one of the first apps I’ve seen to incorporate pen/crayons and paper.

Available for free on iTunes (with just ABC), or for $1.99 for the full alphabet.
