On Sunday we went to the premiere of Aladdin, the pantomime on at the Joburg Theatre.
There’s been a lot of hype about Jeremy Mansfield as the lead of the show, but after seeing Bongi Mthombeni in Starlight Experess, I was keen to see this star. And he was brilliant.
The show, directed and written by legend Janice Honeyman is on at the Joburg Theatre until December 24, and it’s a must-see. It has a strong local angle, great dancing, familiar songs and cool outfits, and it’s really a fun thing to do as a family (you can even sing along, and no one will bat an eyelid. In fact, singing is welcome).
It’s hard to say from what age kids should go – it depends on their tolerance to lights and music. It’s all above board though and “kid friendly”, though my little dude (4) got a little bit scared with the “baddies” (though he’s very sensitive to baddies, even in Pixar movies). So I would say around three upwards, though I know of some musical two-year-olds who would love it and manage well.
Prices for the show are from R180 to R290, and there are discounts for groups of 10 or more. To book, call 0861 670 670, or go the website.
