Eggy Subtract to 20 is an iOS maths app for primary-school kids that tests or reinforces subtraction skills with six cool games. The games include throwing subtraction pies, snowboarding, feeding monsters, helping Teddy climb the rope, memory and finishing Dr Shock’s subtraction grid.

There are two or three levels to finish in each game, and once each activity is finished, new rewards are unlocked.

My experience

I’m a little sorry I’ve been so late to discover apps by the developers, Blake eLearning. All the apps I’ve tried recently such as Eggy Alphabet, Eggy Add to 20 and Eggy Numbers to 100 are fun, interactive and hard to stop playing.

While they say Eggy Subtract to 20 is suitable for kids from the age of four, I feel it’s a bit too young, and that a maths basis is needed before starting. It’s an educational app in that it tests maths and gets kids practising and trying new challenges, but I don’t think it actually TEACHES subtraction.

Even so, it is great for practising and testing out subtraction skills and makes maths a lot of fun. It is also very motivational – kids get rewarded for the right answers, and don’t lose points for getting the wrong ones.
