Apps of the week: something a little different

December 12, 2014

So it feels like with every breath I take, a new app is being launched, and I’m not getting close to featuring all the apps I’d like to across the board (ie for moms, pregnancy, toddlers, preschoolers and learners).

So I’ll now try to feature more apps, but in a shorter format. Instead of a longer shpiel, you’ll get a very brief lowdown on the app. Please let me know how you find the new format, or if you’d like me to go back to basics, featuring one at a time.

For pregnancy:

Pregnancy ++

This is a great app for tracking the development of your baby, with great details and images.

Cool factor: There are other resources such as hospital packing lists and baby name suggestions.

This app is free for IOS and Android

For toddlers:

More Trucks

Like all Duck Duck Moose apps, this one is awesome with great music and colourful visuals. There are four games with the following scenarios: fire truck, monster truck, crane and construction site, and flat bed towtruck and junkyard.

Cool factor: There’s enough to keep kids busy for a while, and it’s a highly intuitive app.

Available for $1.99 for IOS.

For preschoolers:

Feed Me PencilBot Preschool

This is a fun and easy-to-use app and features a cute pet “monster” who is hungry, and wants to be fed the right answers. There are questions about letters, colours, numbers and shapes.

Cool factor: If you feed the monster the wrong answer, he gets sick, but kids can go back to that question later. There are a wide range of questions and challenges.

Available for free for IOS. There are in-app purchases.

For junior learners:

Magnetic Letters

Kids can move magnetic letters in six colours to create words. Each time a letter is moved, you can hear its name being pronounced (you can switch this function off).

Cool factor: You can save your child’s image, and post it to Facebook.

Available for $0.99 for IOS

For moms:

iRewardsChart

There’s nothing wrong with rewards charts, stars and stickers, but if you want an online version that can be backed up online, and synced across multiple devices, then iRewardsChart is a winner.

Cool factor: You can choose from a list of suggested rewards, or you can set up your own tailor-made rewards.

Available for $3.99 for IOS.
