I know we’re not supposed to judge books by their cover, but I did with From Courtrooms to Cupcakes, and even without an awesome email introduction by its author Niki Malherbe, I probably would have bought it on looks and cover blurb alone.
But aside from its cute “take me” cover, From Courtrooms to Cupcakes is an easy and entertaining book, and tells of Niki’s motherhood path (four children in seven years), and her adjustment from a career-driven lawyer to mom.
Niki asks herself the same questions I suspect many of us do – can she juggle a career and kids, is her worth measured only by her kids, and can she nurture her kids and herself?
I read the book over a weekend, and I chuckled, commiserated and felt deeply for Niki. And when it came to an end, I got hooked on Niki’s blog, which is frank and fabulous. I particularly liked her posts about writing books, and she has a brilliant one on self-publishing here (for those who have ever been curious about getting a book published, or have thought about get a book published).
From Courtrooms to Cupcakes is available from leading bookshops (Exclusive Books, the Book Lounge in Cape Town, and Scoobs at Montecasino), for around R200.
