What is the best place to be a mother? And what is the worst?

May 6, 2015

The world’s best place to be a mother is Norway and the world’s worst place is Somalia, according to this year’s Save the Children’s annual State of the World’s Mothers report, which was released on Monday.

The Save the Children report ranks countries on five key factors: risk of maternal death, under-five mortality rate, educational status, economic achievement and political status.

Somalia ranked as the worst place to be a mother for the second year running with findings showing almost 15 per cent of Somali children do not live to see their fifth birthday, the report said.

The contrast between Norway and Somalia is staggering – one Somali woman in 18 is likely to eventually die of a maternal cause where in Norway, dying in pregnancy or childbirth is a one in 15 000 chance.

South Africa ranked 72 out of 179 countries.
