I must be honest that until 2010, I didn’t really watch football, mainly because I didn’t really understand the rules, and particularly, the offside rule.
And then I discovered this, which explained it perfectly:
Since then, I’ve become more interested in the game (and no, it’s not because of the many gorgeous players with tattoos) because it’s energetic, fast-paced and keeps me on the ball, literally (it’s one of those sports that don’t make me check Twitter or Instagram for more entertainment or distraction).
I can’t claim to support any Premier League team religiously or fanatically (and we know those people do exist), I’d probably align myself with Liverpool. It’s a team my dad supported and which I grew up watching. As a late bloomer in sports (participating and viewing), I *only* watched my first Barclays Premier League football match around two years ago, when I dated a Liverpool-obsessed fan.
Yes, I had heard of people missing running Comrades marathon to attend the Barclays Premier League final, and I knew of people who fought others on Twitter to defend their teams, but as they say, better late than never.
At my first match, held at a pub, I was too shy to wear Liverpool colours – I worried that if I appeared like a fan, someone would ask me what I thought of the starting lineup, or share an inside joke or handshake that I wouldn’t get.
I pretty much took my cue from the ardent fans there who cheered, sighed, grimaced and clapped, and it was a memorable experience, from the spirit of the fans, to the heated and paced match. They say you never forgot your first, and I haven’t.
I’ll also never forget how it sparked more of an interest in Barclays Premier League football, and while I won’t contribute to Monday-morning discussions at work about the weekend results, my ears are still open.
