It’s called The Book Owl and it’s meant to get kids excited about books, though I’m excited too that it takes the guesswork out of choosing great kids’ titles, and adds a huge surprise element each month when a box arrives and you don’t yet know what’s in it.
How it works is that you simply order online, and you pay once upfront – you don’t have to commit to a subscription, or a debit order. Each box contains two picture books and one activity book. Your child also gets a personalised letter from the Book Owl (I absolutely adored this touch), while parents will get a letter with information on the books, plus tips on how to read aloud to their kids, and how to engage them best when reading.
Each book is individually wrapped, so you can have a big “opening event” and open them all at once, or spread them out over the month.
A single delivery costs R250, and for three months’ worth it’s R580, which means the price comes down the more you get. For just one box of three books delivered to your door, it works out cheaper that what you’d pay for the books instore, and that’s without the wrapping and personalisation.
This is one of the best subscription boxes I’ve come across, and I think it’s something that will always keep giving – to you and your kids. They also make brilliant gifts too.
