11 fantastic back-to-school apps for kids

January 14, 2016

Since it’s that back-to-school time of year, I thought I’d list some good educational and resource apps for school-going kids. Some of them are suited to nursery school kids, while others are matched to older learners – you’ll be able to assess general age appropriateness from the descriptions.

1. Endless Wordplay: For rhyming and entertaining word puzzles (free, iOS)

Good to know: There are other brilliant apps in the Endless range such as Reader, Numbers and Learning Academy, and all are worth a look.

2. The Everything Machine: For simple visual programming that combines your device’s camera, microphone, speakers, gyroscope, and screen to make a light, a stop-motion camera, a kaleidoscope, a voice disguiser, a cookie thief catcher, or anything else you can think of! (R39.99, iOS)

3. Toca Lab: For teaching kids about the elements, and what happens when they’re heated, cooled, mixed and magnetised (R39.99 on iOS).

Good to know: Toca Boca apps have been downloaded more than 100 million times, and they’re my most recommended apps (they have apps for toddlers and upwards).
