The products that made my pregnancy easier – and more glowing (plus VIDEO)

September 7, 2016

I often get asked what products I use when I'm pregnant to feel and look better, and it's something I tend to ask other pregnant moms too to see what works for them, and to find new products this way too.

I decided to include some of my favourites in a post, and while I have loved using them during pregnancy, I'm sure I'll continue with them beyond.

I've also done a video post on the products explaining a bit more about them, so this list is quite brief and to the point.

For stretch marks and dry skin: Bio-Oil

I used Bio-Oil for my first pregnancy, and didn't really stop there. It's the original tissue oil, made here and sold around the world, and I love it for its easy and non-greasy application, and the reduction of the appearance of stretchmarks. It's available from chemists, supermarkets and baby shops, starting at around R55.

For overall body treatment: Anything from Oh-lief

This is one of my favourite brands, for moms and babies. It's local, organic and does everything it claims so well. Also, the packaging is sensational. All products are available from the Oh-Lief site and other retailers. Products start at around R55.

For a great tummy rub: Mama Mio Tummy Rub Butter

This tummy butter is a popular favourite, from a popular pregnancy, maternity and beyond brand that has other sensational products in the range. This butter feels quite luxe, but still easy to apply and absorb. For stockist info, go to the Poise Brands website. The tummry rub butter costs around R770.

For eyes that look rested: REN Instant Brightening Beauty Shot Eye Lift

Ever since I read the Guardian call this product "a knockout – the only eye lift you really need" in January, I've been waiting so eagerly for this product to arrive here. It's here, and it's pretty good at making you look more rested and "glowing". Available from REN for around R650.

For treating sinuses and a blocked nose: Iliadin

My gynae gave this the go-ahead after I told her about my cold and sinus pain. Since then, I've taken it whenever I've felt a cold coming on, and it's been brilliant. I truly don't know what I would have done without it… aside from complain to my husband a lot. Available from chemists for around R65.

For treating heartburn: Gaviscon Plus

Aside from something my gynae prescribed for me during my last trimester, this shelf antacid was the most effective in treating my heartburn. I still use it when times are tough, and generally get instant relief. Available from chemists and supermarkets for around R40.

For a natural cough remedy: Prospan

I've had several coughs this year, and so sceptically bought this since it's the only one deemed safe during pregnancy. It has worked so well each time, much to my surprise – I didn't believe a natural cough syrup could be this good. Available from chemists from around R60.

For feeling more energetic: Herbaforce Schlehen Blackthorn Berry Elixir

This tonic contains blackthorn berries and sugar, and it makes me feel sprightlier. It's also an ingredient in the well-known Jungle Juice, and I love it while breastfeeding, and felt pretty good on it. Available from supermarkets, chemists and baby shops for around R180.

Hi @shaaista. I use Palmer’s Cocoa Butter cream which is really luxurious and helps with dry skin and stretch marks. You can get it from most shops.

Weird q, but are you taking Omega-3s? It might help with dryness, though if you’re not experiencing dryness anywhere else, then maybe a tummy butter to add to the Bio-Oil, or Bio-Oil twice a day?
