Here's a confession: when I got the SunStream Plus solar charger to try, I thought that that maybe they had made a mistake. I have access to electricity, I prefer more shiny and "glam" stuff, and I'm not really into camping or going to places without power.
But I started doing some reading (the reviews are really good) and this solar charger got me fired up, and I tried it out. For starters, it's quite hardy – it's drop tested, it's waterproof and, while this might be an obvious one, it can withstand high temperatures. It's so hardworking that it can also charge when submerged in water (just don't put your phone in the water too, unless it's also waterproof, of course). To stream electrciity, simply point it to the sun, and charge a phone through a USB volt.
So why do I think it's cool, aside from its cool specs? Well, it's awesome if you're camping, hiking or picnic'ing, and need to power up your phone. It's also fantastic for kids to learn how solar electricity works. My son and I enjoyed powering up my dead phone after he charged it in the sun – he left it outside in the morning, and we charged it in the afternoon.
At R350 on its own and R550 as a kit that includes a power bank, this is a cool gift for an adventurer or outdoor enthusiast, or even for your kids to teach them about solar power.
The SunStream PLUS is available at all Builders Warehouse and select MTN stores across South Africa.
