My best online shopping sites for haircare, pet food, meat and more!

March 3, 2017

Aside from my usual regular suspects for online shopping, for example Takealot, Woolworths and Pick n Pay, and occasionally Spree, Zando and Superbalist, there are some sites that get my nod – and credit card.

Braai Free

This site and its offerings and service are superb, and each week we choose our meat or chicken, and get it delivered for free two days later. The quality is really good from what I've eaten (only chicken and beef), and the service has been great, with the meat getting delivered to your kitchen in a cooler box each week (the cooler box stays with your order, by the way).

There's a wide selection of beef, chicken, lamb and even pork, and they also sell products such as frozen meals (eg lasagne, macaroni cheese and canneloni), condiments and cold meets and cheese. Their biltong is also really good.

If you find it hard to choose, or looking for a good deal there are hampers on offer too, such as Braai Master Value Combo, Party Hamper, Saving Hamper and Steak and Biltong Hamper.

Let me not forget that they also have sweet stuff like chocolate mousse and cinnamon rolls, which I haven't tried yet, but will order soon. I'm keen to see if their sweet stuff matches to their savouries.

For now, delivery is only in Gauteng, but on their homepage, they say that they'll soon be in all major regions. Yay – it will soon be braai the beloved country…

One of my worst chores is buying dog and cat food. I don't know why, but it just is one the grudgiest things I need to do as a pet owner (I'd rather clean up poop in the garden)

For pet owners like, Petheaven is just that – a heavenly service. Here, you can choose from tens of premium cat and food brands, as well as toys, medication and accessories such as collars and leashes.

The site is great to navigate, and you can choose by brand, or breed or size of your pet. You can search by price, in case you're after the most affordable premium brand.

Delivery is free for orders of over R500 in the Joburg, Cape Town and Durban areas. You also get up to 10% off on a scheduled delivery, for example, if you schedule a delivery between one and 16 weeks).

Just a word of warning: delivery time is approximate, and I've had one or two instances when the food has arrived two or so days later than the scheduled delivery. It's not a big deal unless you don't have someone home the whole time, or you've run out of food.

I buy all my hair products here – the service is swift and efficient, and I often buy products based on what specials they've got, saving me time AND cash. They have a wide range of top hair brands (stylers, shampoos, conditioners and treatments) available, plus a smaller selection of makeup and skincare products. Their nail range is also great.

Delivery is free for orders over R500.

Reader's Warehouse

Reader's Warehouse has a brilliant book selection, and their prices are often the best, especially on the kids' front.

What's more is that their site is so great – it's easy to browse and discover books, and there are always specials, plus a bookclub and the opportunity to join their "Review Crew".

Delivery is free for orders more than R250, and you can also choose to collect from your nearest store.
