A magazine beauty editor reveals her best products – and biggest beauty regrets

October 5, 2017

Oooh I'm loving this series and finding out more about who in the beauty biz is using what, and this week I'm featuring FAIRLADY beauty editor Kelli Clifton (in case you missed it – I featured blogger Tori Tatham last week). Kelly has been in the beauty industry for more than seven years, and I particularly love her Instagram feed, which shows her beauty loves, what she receives, and her great travels.

Kelli says her particular interests include a decadent face oil, shimmery bronzing powder and anything by Jo MaloneYou can follow Kelli on Instagram and Twitter.

What’s in your makeup routine?

During the week, I always wear a primer, full coverage foundation, concealer, bronzer (I’m not the biggest fan of blusher), mascara and eyeliner. If I have an event, I’ll wear a bold lipstick but stick to lipgloss when I’m having a ‘casual day.’ I don’t wear makeup on the weekends and like to give my skin a break on Saturdays and Sundays.

What's your biggest beauty regret?

Applying too much fake tan in the incorrect shade and not exfoliating in the essential places (elbows, wrists, ankles, etc). I have too many photos lurking on Facebook attesting to these cringe-worthy moments.

What’s the one treatment you want?

Hmmm… I’ve had the opportunity to try them all: Botox, lasering, anti-cellulite body treatments…. I think next on my list is lip fillers. I’ll keep you posted!

What’s the one product you would love to try?

There’s a product by Estée Lauder I have my eye on that I’d seriously love to try. It’s called Estée Lauder Advanced Night Repair Recovery Mask In Oil which works in conjunction with their cult Advanced Night Repair Serum, aka my favourite skincare product of all time.

Your favourite lipstick?

My favourite lipstick at the moment is the delicious Dior Rouge Dior Double Rouge Matte Metal Colour & Couture Contour Lipstick in 999 Matte Metal – a mixture of red and coral that has a creamy texture and gives the lips rich metallic colour. It doesn’t dry out the lips and lasts for ages, no matter how many sips of wine you have.

Favourite fragrance?

Anything Jo Malone – I’m absolutely obsessed! I unashamedly collect all the fragrances and their scented candles, hand&body washes and diffusers. Their two latest releases have stolen my heart in a big way: English Oak & Hazelnut and English Oak & Redcurrant.

One other fragrance that I have to make mention of: the newest Chanel called ‘Gabrielle’ is incredible. I wear that often too. It’s the brand’s biggest fragrance launch in 15 years and has notes of ylang-ylang, orange blossom and jasmine. If you love white floral scents, this will be your new go-to.

What's your best beauty tip/hack?

Getting a fringe is the perfect solution if you suffer from ‘lazy girl hair’. It hides unkempt brows, makes your hairstyle look more slick – regardless if it’s in a ponytail, loose or half up. Plus, if you’re stuck for time and can’t wash your hair, add a little shampoo to your fringe, rinse and blowdry. It’s a great way to freshen up your look.

What deodorant and perfume are you wearing right now?

I’m wearing a Dove Anti-perspirant and combination of Jo Malone English Oak & Hazelnut and English Oak & Redcurrant (surprise surprise!).

What hair products are you currently using?

Inoar Vegan Shampoo and Conditioner; Milkshake Deep Cleansing Shampoo; Bumble and Bumble Bb Hairdresser’s Invisible Oil; Davines Naturaltech Nourishing Vegetarian Miracle Conditioner.

What is the one beauty look you wish you could create (this might not apply to you – for me it’s the smoky eye)

I wish I could come up with more creative ways to wear my hair, I just don’t have the patience to play around with it. And it’s too thick and long! If I need it curled or straightened, I get it done professionally. Usually I just wash and go.

What treatment/product would you never use/try again?

Bad products, not so much but terrible spa experiences – COUNTLESS!

Your top seven beauty items you would take to an island?

After recently coming back from Greece, these were my favourites:

– First and foremost, my beloved Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream (everyone knows this) – aka the oracle of all beauty products.

– Eucerin Sun Crème SPF 50 for Face

– Piz Buin Wet Skin Transparent Sun Spray SPF 30

– Dior Diorskin Nude Air Luminizer Serum

– Cetaphil Moisturising Cream for Face

– Eucerin’s Urea Repair Plus 10% Urea+Ceramide & NMF Lotion

– Elemis Superfood Facial Oil

Lipstick or mascara?

Lipstick, always and forever!

What’s in your makeup bag right now?

My makeup bag is overflowing at the moment, but these are the products that stand out for me:

– Sephora Stippling Makeup Brush

– Too Faced Born This Way Foundation

– Estée Lauder Double Wear Nude Cushion Stick Radiant Makeup

– Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara

– MAC Mineralize Skinfinish

– Urban Decay Naked Heat Palette

– What’s your beauty vice?

I LOVE a great Gel-It or Gelish manicure, Alyce at the Loft Spa does mine (she’s the absolute BEST: she’s quick and the mani lasts for at least 3 weeks and the have every colour under the sun, be sure to arrive early so you can choose your hue – that’s the only time consuming part!). I’m also a sucker for a great blow-dry.
