I’ve known Liezel Els for a few years, and I’ve witnessed her incredible and varied work – from photography and video editing, to mobile photography, and more recently, her exquisite illustrations.
My readers often ask about where they can get personalised illustrations for their kids, whether it’s for nurseries, memory books or other artwork, so if you’re looking, or if you want to gift someone with something special, then head to Liezel’s site where you can order an existing design, or get your own custom made.
Here’s what she did for my kids, Max and Rebecca:
Liezel says she started drawing at the age of four. “My father is an engineer and he always had these massive pieces of old plans that I was allowed to draw on, and I loved it. I’ve always been drawing in one way or another, but I’ve had a very big jump from drawing Lion King characters, to what I’m drawing now.
“Traditional art using real watercolours and paintbrushes was always my first love and I did only that for a couple of years. I’ve been doing digital design for the past 14 years, so integrating traditional art with digital art came rather naturally. When Apple launched the 12.9 inch iPad Pro with the Apple Pencil, I knew it was going to change my life. I bought it as soon as I was able to afford it and you know what? It was in my sock drawer for about six months before I picked it up to draw on it for the first time and once I did, it has become an extension of my hand. I take it with me everywhere and I can hardly keep up with keeping it charged, so I had to buy another Apple Pencil to make sure I always have a charged one ready for when inspiration strikes.
My illustrations are very personal and they all have stories, some happy and some less happy. They mean so much to me and they are a visual representation of my life.”
Liezel’s designs start at R850 each, while commissioned pieces range from R950.
PS: If you’re looking for illustrations for elements of your business, this is a great place to start too.
