I often think about emigrating, not necessarily to escape the ills here (and I don’t want to go into all of that, because this platform is generally a happy space), but to experience something different, whether it’s incredible city views from an apartment, riding a bicycle to work, or buying an authentic French baguette while walking home from work.
These fantasies come from my travels, movies (obvs), Pinterest (another obvs) as well as my imagination of things grander and more cosmopolitan.
Where would you head to if you could? Sydney, for a similar climate and healthy lifestyle? London, for its culture and central location in the world? Or Dubai, for work opportunities and an expat lifestyle?
I don’t know where I’m most suited, and I imagine I would need a lot of money to live well in my dream cities such as Paris and New York. I also know that for every gain I’ll have overseas, there will also be a sacrifice or “loss”. If I head to London for example, I’ll lose out on an incredible climate here. Going to the City of Light means never being able to communicate perfectly, even though I could reach a basic to good understanding of French.
My point isn’t about what’s better and what’s worse, but rather that we give up to gain (you know that old saying, “What you lose on the roundabouts, you gain on the swings”.
Things I would miss so much, aside from my family and friends:
- The climate
- Races such as Comrades and Two Oceans, and the incredible running community we have here
- A good lifestyle in the way of things: comfortable house, car, garden
- The ability to be able to eat out regularly
- Affordable childcare
- The option of good primary and high schools
What would you miss if you left?
