No more “What can I watch on TV?” for the kids. Plus a win 1 of 3 Showmax subscriptions

My son always finds it amusing that “back in my day” we basically had one TV channel, and that TV was in English on alternative nights, AND, horror – we didn’t have a TV remote in my earlier days. I haven’t even explained yet how I used to listen to Beverly Hills 90210 in simulcast because the version on TV had been dubbed into Afrikaans.

It’s a far cry from what we have today, and it’s such that I can get an episode of Peppa Pig on Showmax as soon as my toddler demands it (and we all know about the limitations of a toddler’s patience). It’s also such that not only can one stream hours and hours of broad content, but that you can also download programmes and watch them offline. Much like the equivalent of our VHS video machine in the 80s, I guess. This is really useful if you’re on a plane, or don’t have great WiFI if you’re travelling or on holiday, or don’t want to eat into your 3G. On ShowMax, you can download up to 25 titles to watch offline – Peppa Pig for Rebecca, and Grey’s Anatomy reruns for me, for example.

Also, you can watch Showmax on your TV, laptop, tablet and phone, and you can register up to five devices to watch with your Showmax subscription. You can also watch two different shows on two devices at the same time (yay – no more issues between siblings who are vying for different shows).

Here’s just some of what you can expect for kids on Showmax (I simply couldn’t include everything, but for a good browse, head here)

Also look out for:

Pablo: This has been nominated as Best Pre-School Programme at the 2019 Broadcast Awards. It’s about five-and-a-half-year-old Pablo who is on the autism spectrum. To cope with the challenges he faces, the smart, funny and creative Pablo draws imaginary animal friends, which come to life to help him handle situations that make him feel anxious.

And here are some of my earmarked shows this holiday:

  • Tali’s Wedding Diaries, again. I watched it this time last year, and my ribs ached from laughter, and I can’t wait to see it again.
  • Vanity Fair (series)
  • Rise (series)
  • Pitch Perfect (movie) – always on repeat!
  • The Girlfriend Experience (series): “Called ‘utterly bingeworthy’ by critics, this captivating drama follows several women who lead double lives as professional escorts. But it’s not just about the sex – they provide much more. Strictly no under-18s.

Other need-to-knows:

  • You can get a 14-day free Showmax trial.
  • A month’s subscription costs R99 (FYI: this rate hasn’t gone up since Showmax’s launch in 2015, which is pretty remarkable considering thousands and thousands more shows have been added, plus that thing called inflation).
  • DStv Premium subscribers get Showmax included with the cost of their subscription, so they pay absolutely nothing extra, while DStv Compact and Compact Plus subscribers pay R49 for a full Showmax subscription.
  • It’s simple to sign up, and will take around two minutes, max (get it?). Just go onto Showmax, and sign in from the homepage. For more info on how this works, read this blog post for more.
  • If you’re a Vodacom contract or prepaid customer, you can add Showmax to your Vodacom bill. If you do this before the end of January 2019, you’ll get three months of FREE Showmax and 5GB of data every month for free to use for streaming series and movies on Showmax.
  • Once the three months’ free subscription to Showmax has expired, Vodacom customers will pay R49 per month for Showmax for the following nine months instead of the full price of R99 per month. There’s no contract or lock-in period – Showmax can be cancelled at any time before the promotion ends and you won’t be billed. For more info on this, head here.
