Just the treat I needed – high tea at Fairlawns

February 5, 2019

I’ve been battling to come to terms with the fact that I’m no longer on holiday, and back in the swing and hustle of things. I’ve been yearning for more lazy afternoons and more relaxation, so an invitation for high tea at Fairlawns, the five-star hotel in Morningside was just the ticket to a sumptuous afternoon with bae (who even a month into the year is also looking a bit wan and in need of some R&R).

Visiting luxe hotels always make me feel like I’m on holiday, even if it’s for a few hours. Service is usually elevated, the surrounds are often stellar, and when coupled with some sensational drinks and food, I’m transported far away.

I was last at Fairlawns a few years ago to do a writeup for Living and Loving magazine. It was a memorable stay, and the hot stone massage the day after in their spa is on my top-five list of best spa treatments ever.

High teas at the hotel take place in the Manor House Bistro, and it’s best to book in advance.

The tea menu is long, and it gets infused for the correct amount of time per variety (shorter for green teas, and longer for florals), and served in beautiful cast-iron teapots.

The savoury platter comes first, followed by the sweet. Here’s what’s on the menu:

-Traditional scones, with fruit preserve, cream chantilly and emmenthaler cheese
– Marinated roasted vegetable hummus wraps
– Smoked salmon roulade and cucumber salsa
– Vegetarian savoury quiches
– Finger sandwiches
– Egg mayo, smoked chicken, cucumber and cream cheese
– Flourless chocolate cake and Turkish delight
– Berry macaroons
– Micro carrot cake
– Mini strawberry swiss rolls
– Chocolate dipped strawberry

If you’re looking beyond a high tea, and want to do something really special on Valentine’s Day, have a look at what’s on offer. Romance and luxury? Tick!

The cost per person for a high tea is R325. For more info on Fairlawns, check out their website. You can also find them on Instagram with their magnificent pics of the hotel.
