May 29 is Tekkie Tax Day, and the mechanism is simple: you buy a sticker (or more) for R10 each, wear takkies or sneakers on the day, and your money will be donated to a welfare organisation of your choice (you can choose from five beneficiary sectors – animals, basic family care, children, disability and education). You can also get a pair of cool shoelaces called “Tekkie Tags” (R30 including your sticker of choice).
There are more than 1 500 NGO recipients, and last year R4.8 million was raised.
To get a sticker, buy one from Toys R US or Babies R Us, or contact the head office 012-663 8181 (they’re currently looking for a retailer).
You can also donate via your cellphone. Simply SMS “A, B, C, D or E” to 44400, and you will donate R20 to the beneficiary sector of your choice. Donations can be made at any time, not just around May 29.
