Have you heard to Ida Frosk? Chances are you’ve seen her amazing food art

I’ve seen these gorgeous works of food art on Pinterest and the internet, and I’m amazed that someone has come up with the ideas, and executes them wonderfully. I’ve also thought how cool it would be to serve my toddler some of this food.

Some Twitter intel led me to the eye and hand behind these beautiful works of food, Ida Skivenes, or Ida Frosk her username. Ida lives in Norway, and just as I was about to slap her pictures on this site, I decided to chance it and send her an email with some questions. And here are her answers…


How do you keep on coming up with new ideas?

By letting myself be inspired by what’s around me, whether it’s the weather or a movie I recently saw. The ideas are out there, it just takes a bit of thinking to make them come alive.

What is your favourite food?

Pancakes or scones.

What tools do you use to create food art?

I work with things that’s already in most kitchens: a cutting board, a bread knife, a vegetable knife, scissors and on occasion cookie cutters (but very rarely). To make more intricate designs I use squeeze bottles for pancake batter or yogurt.

Do moms often say that your food art inspires them to create healthy meals for their kids?

Yes, I do get messages saying that from moms, and for me that’s the greatest compliment I can get.

Do you think well-presented food encourages kids to eat, and to eat healthily?

I think how food is presented can be an important factor in enticing kids to try things they normally wouldn’t eat. It brings a bit of magic and humour to the table.

What are your best ingredients to work with?

Greek yogurt and fresh berries on the sweet side, cream cheese and bell pepper on the savoury.

What are the hardest ingredients to work with?

Things that are crumbly, very tough to cut or too liquid.

What is always in your fridge?

It’s always stuffed! You’ll always find jams, cheese, yogurt, eggs and usually a range of berries and vegetables.

What’s always in your grocery cupboard?

Oatmeal, nuts, seeds, dried fruit, spices and shredded coconut. Plus a whole bunch of other things, I’m a grocery hoarder, it’s the only kind of shopping I can stand.

Would you share recipes too, or are your pictures enough to inspire and give ideas?

I have a book coming out this autumn (spring in South Africa) with recipes, so until then the pictures will have to be enough. The majority of the ideas are quite straightforward though.
