Help threatened species when you shop at Woolworths, PLUS win a R500 gift card

May 15, 2013

I am fond of sweets (read: I can eat packets of the things) and I am fond of animals, so it’s a perfect melding when the two meet for me. Like eating gum sweets, and helping endangered species at the same time.

You might have seen them before – the “Every Paw Print Counts” fruit-flavoured sweets in Woolies stores. They come in pink and grey packets, and in two varieites: the wild dog and rhino. Moms will also be happy to know that there are no dyes or tartrazine in the sweets.

Each time you buy a packet of sweets, R1 gets donated to the Endangered Wildlife Trust which helps conserve cheetah, rhino and African wild dog.

At the time of writing this post, I have scoffed all the sweets in the pictures, though I tell myself it’s for the environment, right?

Woolworths and MyPlanet will also donate R8 and R10 respectively when you buy a bracelet or shopping bag with the message “Every Paw Print Counts”. The money will go to to the Endangered Wildlife Trust and the Wildlife ACT Fund.

You’ll find the “Every Paw Print Counts” products at selected Woolies and online.

If you’d like to do even more for threatened species, you can get a MyPlanet card by applying at any Woolworths store or online. Then, every time you swipe your card at Woolworths or other MySchool partners, a donation will go to the organisation/s you choose (you’re allowed up to three beneficiaries) without any cost to you.

If you’re already a MySchool MyVillage MyPlanet supporter, you can add or change your beneficiary by calling MySchool on 0860 100 445. You can also link your MySchool card number to any Woolies card to ensure that you give back every time you shop at Woolies.

Win!

Woolworths is giving away one gift card worth R500 to a reader of this blog. To enter, simply fill in your details below (your details won’t be published or visible on the site, so don’t worry), and comment and say which animal is closest to your heart (ie the rhino, wild dog, or cheetah). There is no “right” answer – we’re just curious to know.

The competition closes on Friday 24 May, and the winner will be announced on Tuesday June 4.

Good luck!
