Here’s a good serving: ingredients and recipes delivered to your door with Daily Dish

August 20, 2014

I first heard about Daily Dish from some Cape Town mom bloggers, and I was quite excited that a service existed to sort out your dinner situation by delivering everything you need to make four meals – you can choose between classic, low carb or vegetarian options.

When I got a trial delivery last week of low-carb meals, some people asked if I had to do the cooking myself, and the answer is yes! These aren’t ready-cooked meals they’re delivering, but rather raw  ingredients in the right quantities to enable you to make a meal for two or four people, without the “hassle” of planning, shopping and wasting food (like when you buy a packet of herbs, and you only need a sprig or two).

Here’s what you need to know:

New recipes are crafted every week so you’ll enjoy a wide range of different dishes.

Al the dishes come with step-by-step recipe cards.

Dishes are designed to be easy-to-cook and take around 30 minutes from start to finish.

The service currently operates in Cape Town, Joburg and Pretoria.

You can order from week to week – there are no contracts or binding you to commit to longer than that. There’s quite a cool “Pause-resume” button so you can stop the service, and opt back in whenever you want.

Prices will depend on what menu you choose, and in what quantities.

My thoughts

I was utterly impressed with the service, from the ease of the online registration, to the great non-spam-like communication, to the delivery itself. It’s all slick and seamless, and the quality of the ingredients was really good. The recipes are easy to follow, and the meals I tried were great.

For me, ultimate convenience is popping a meal into the microwave and heating it for three minutes, but that’s obviously limiting and sometimes not all that healthy. The Daily Dish service is a convenience and time-saver if you still want to cook, and I think it could be a fun exercise with kids to unwrap ingredients and follow the recipe steps together.

Currently, you can’t choose exactly what meals you want from each menu section, but from next month you’ll be able to choose. This is great if you have dietary requirements or preferences. For example, I don’t eat pork, and can’t not get a substitute currently, but from next month, I’ll be able to choose something else.

Would I recommend this service? Absolutely. Would I pay for it? Yes – but I would need to make sure I was home that week, and had the time and inclination to cook, even if it’s just for half an hour.

PS

I’m giving away a week’s worth of Daily Dish deliveries to three readers next week! Check back for details.
