If you’re not moisturising your baby’s skin, here’s why you should be

April 29, 2015

I used to think that because my baby’s skin was so soft, that I didn’t need to moisturise it, especially in winter, or when I was dealing with a crying or niggly child.

As it turns out, a baby’s skin is more sensitive and delicate to that of older children and adults. It’s the essential shield that offers protection from the outside world, but as it is much thinner, it requires a higher level of care, hydration and moisturising to keep it healthy and soft. It’s therefore worthwhile to moisturise daily, even if it’s easier not to.

Other reasons to moisturise?

It keeps your baby’s skin hydrated and soft

The skin plays an important role in maintaining your baby’s health. It regulates your baby’s internal temperature and is a tool for exploring the world through touch. It’s vital that you protect it with a daily skin care regime.

It helps treat skin rash, eczema and dry skin

Up to 1 in 5 babies are affected by eczema. The key to help treating it is ensuring you keep the skin moisturised as much as possible in addition to following proper professional advice.

It gives them the benefits of touch

Touch is so important to our health and wellbeing. Studies have shown that touch therapy, including baby massage, contributes to a healthy weight gain, enhanced growth and social development in babies.

It provides them with a healthy barrier against bacteria and infection

Your baby’s delicate skin is highly absorbent and vulnerable to irritants, changes in temperature, and humidity. Proper moisturisation gives your baby a healthy barrier against environmental changes, harsh cleansers and bacteria.

It protects against effects of harsh external environments

Hot climate and exposure to sunlight, air conditioning and fans are common factors that dry your baby’s skin. A daily regime of moisturising helps to replenish their skin’s natural level of hydration and softness.
