Johnson’s Baby launches ethnic haircare range for babies, plus great tips on how to care for baby/toddler hair

February 27, 2014

Johnson’s Baby have just launched the Soft & Shiny haircare range for black babies, filling a big gap in the market (their research showed that only 30% of black moms washed their babies’ hair with shampoo).

The new range includes a shampoo, a conditioner, and a comb-through spray, all made to cleanse, moisturise and make combing curls easier.

The Soft & Shiny range is available from Pick n Pay, Shoprite, Spar and Clicks, and start from R21.95 each.

Walda Nxanga, owner of Divas and Dudes hair salon in Ruimsig, has the following advice for kids’ ethnic hair:

Washing & conditioning:

Wash the hair once every week is recommended for ethnic childrens hair, more than that can dry it out

Use the pads of the finger in a “scratching” motion to cleanse the scalp/roots, rather than using hands to lather entire head

Comb the hair out while you’re conditioning it to remove the tangles while it’s wet and relatively slick

Using a leave-in conditioner after washing helps when combing through hair and blow-drying

Do a deep conditioner or hot oil treatment once a month

For youth that exercise and sweat, rinse the salt out of the hair even if you don’t wash it (Condition it afterwards with a daily leave-in conditioner)

Black hair is extremely fragile
A gentle touch is required to avoid unnecessary breakage and hair loss
Always use a wide tooth comb when combing the hair
Avoid fine tooth combs as they snag and pull out curly/kinky hair
Invest in a quality brush
There is a common trend of hair loss due to excessive pulling, relaxing, bonding and braiding hair for long periods of time
