Show me the party – Georgia’s 3rd birthday party with a boho theme

May 21, 2015

I got a stunning email last week from Samantha de Kock, whose name I’ve seen on social media. Sam is a graphic designer who’s recently set up a business called Leo + Ness, a design service offering creative wedding and event stationery and corporate branding solutions.

Usually moms approach me with their kids’ parties, but this time, Sam (who clearly adores her goddaughter) introduced me to her goddaughter Georgia’s thrid birthday party with a pink white and gold boho theme.

Look at the pictures and you’ll see not only Sam’s design talents, but Georgia’s mom Debbie Malton too, a filmmaker, and photographer Jolandi Finlayson.

Mom Debbie writes: “As Georgia’s 2nd birthday approached, I desperately wanted to do up a party that was not the typical ‘Hello Kitty’ or any other themed kids party idea that has been done over time and again. Filming weddings myself every weekend, there are so many beautiful set ups I so wish I could do, so to have a reason to was exciting.

Totally stumped for ideas how to even start, I had to approach Sam, Georgia’s godmother, as she is the only person I know who thinks so far out the box with a real and genuine talent for anything extraordinary (and of course, she is a graphic designer too!). Sam immediately came up with the idea of ‘boho chic’, which could not have been more perfect as Georg has always been a whimsical, quaint little girl. And so the planning began!

The colours chosen were pink, white and glitter gold. After scouring the net I found a few cute ideas to get started – glitter gold arrows for cupcake toppers, tissue paper tassels and gold glitter dipped white feathers. I had a few Purity jars at home (I always knew they’d come in handy), that I dipped in the glitter too, to use as jars filled with pretty Woolies flowers.

I covered a large Polystyrene G with the glitter, made my own teepee out of long wooden poles covered with the perfect dusty pink stretch lace from Waste Centre – a sweet idea that turned out lovely!

For sweet eats we opted for a ‘naked’ cake but with white, pink and gold icing smeared on (a sort of dirty ice technique), and meringues on top with fresh roses. To add to the sweetness I added in some cake pops! The food table was made of stacked pallets with draped lace and the tassels as a backdrop.

A top the palettes I used small wooden crates, I had made previously for another home function, to create height with my various flower jars. We served food on bread boards, and brought our sideboard outside as the drink stand which Sam draped the glitter ‘Whooohooo’ sign across. We served the juices in big glass beverage dispensers with purity jar ‘glasses’ and my ever favourite, pink and black chevron paper straws.

The teepee area came together so wonderfully when Sam used our lounge rug as the base and surrounded the teepee entrance with her own props of little tree stump tables, where we placed flower vases, and a wooden frame from which she hung tassels and the gold G with flower ribbon.

A fun ‘boho’ activity we set up for the kids was potato stamping on mini canvas bags I had sewn, which my niece Chloe loved. It was a scorching day, the bubble machine was spreading magic, the ball pond was inflated, it was hot hot hot and a lot of effort, but such fun!
