Last year I was among some bloggers who were going to try out the Spindel (a laundry spinner) and possibly write about it. For some reason, it never happened, and I was quite relieved – here was an appliance that looked like a dustbin, and how was I ever supposed to find huge appeal in a little dryer?
And then I started reading some rave reviews, and learnt that it was a Fairlady magazine consumer award finalist, and realised I’d probably been too swift to judge the Spindel.
Fortunately I was offered a spin (yeah yeah, I went there) of the Spindel, and boy have I crossed over. In fact, my tumble dryer hasn’t been used since (a good thing, since I pay for my electricity, and the dryer consumes a lot of power – see graph below).
So what is the Spindel? It’s a laundry spin dryer that uses centrifugal force and not heat to remove excess moisture from laundry. It can be used with all fabrics, and on machine and hand-washed stuff too.
Each load takes a few minutes, and some fabrics can be ironed immediately. It’s also highly energy efficient. If I had to find “fault”, it would be that laundry doesn’t come out 100% dry, and that the bin has less capacity for laundry than a tumble dryer would (ie it’s smaller). However, this is not a biggie, and at only R1 599, I am definitely not complaining. It’s also very light, and takes up just a small space in a corner of my kitchen (next to the recycling bag).
