If you’re feeling the winter doldrums, here are five amazing hair colour trends to help lift you up

July 3, 2015
This week I received an email from L’Oreal that was *exactly* what I’ve been thinking about… making changes to feel better when often the season (winter) leaves us feeling a bit unfab. Winter is probably the time I feel worst about myself, and I have to work a bit harder (ie use more products)  to moisturise, glow and not want to get into my onesie and hide my face under the duvet.
The L’Oreal email was about new hair colour trends, and the bonus is that it included tips from my own stylist, Shelene Shaer of Tanaz. Shelene is a master cutter and colourist and good person, who got me onto the Babylights trend a few months ago, with great results (I wrote about it here).
In case you’re looking for a change for now or for later in the year, have a look at these colour trend options.

1. Balayage

The Balayage Technique, also known as Splashlights, is trending again. Balayage is a French word which means to sweep or to paint. THe freehand technique allows for sun-kissed natural looking hair colour, as one sees on children’s hair. With Balayage, re-growth lines are softer and far less noticeable. The main objective for creating soft natural looks is to focus on the less is more principle.

The Balayage pieces should be close together, soft at the root, leading to a thicker highlight at the ends of the hair. Balayage works best on brunettes with longer, thicker, and heavier hair.

2. Babylights and Sombre

These have a lot in common. They both result in a darker-to-lighter fade with micro-thin highlights, creatig the effect of sunshine on a child’s hair.
Babylights are cost-saving, giving you more time on your re-growth. You can take your appointments from every six weeks to every 12 if you have no grey.
The first set takes time and is quite costly, so discuss your budget with your stylist and take it from there.

3. Bronde

Even brunettes want to be blonde and bronde is the answer!

Bronde is blonde and brunette in perfect harmony and is ideal for dark-haired clients who want to try a lighter colour with natural, healthy-looking hair results. Bronde can be warm, cool or neutral.

The trick for natural-looking bronde is not to have too much contrast between the roots and highlighted end. With minimal contrast, the result is low on upkeep, and fresher looking.

4. Ecaille

Ecaille is the French word for tortoiseshell, and has been described as the moody sister to ombre and bronde. The Ecaille look is not as dramatic as ombre but more obvious than bronde.

The result is achieved by mixing golden lights with darker, richer caramel tones and including honey, amber, golden blonde and dark brown shades, coupled with gloss.

Ecaille comprises a wide range of different shades, from honey and amber tones to darker bases and golden strands. The diverse options make for a wide range of choice and it’s best to discuss with your stylist what works best with your skin tone.

5. Dip Dye

If you’re looking for a striking look, Dip Dye is the way to go. Instead of a gradual fading of colour, dip dye creates a sharp colour contrast. Bright pink, electric blue, lime green, vibrant purple … the dipped section can be any colour you want!

To achieve the Dip Dye look, the ends are dipped in a pre-lightener and then once the hair is a pale yellow, the colour is applied.
