Seriously, start prepping for Black Friday now

September 30, 2022

For the last few weeks, I’ve been planning for Black Friday in my head, and there are some things I’m holding off buying now (new running watch, hairdryer, boots) in the hopes that they’ll be on sale around or on Black Friday.

More than just bigger items, I’m quite strategic about Black Friday. I tend to get ahead with festive gifts, buy clothes for the kids for the next season and stock up on toiletries or cosmetics I know I’ll be needing for the next few months.

There’s a fine line though between buying things you don’t really need just because they’re seemingly cheaper and using your money wisely and buying things you really need and will use. There’s also a risk that you buy things because they’re marketed as being on sale, but you discover it’s less 10% somewhere else.

To get your money’s worth and nail Black Friday, here are some tips:

1. Assess what you need or want beforehand

This step is key to not overspending, or buying things you don’t need, or getting distracted and not keeping your eye on the prize, ie the things you really want/need. Make a list of what you need/want, and identify the best stockists for those items.

This is a tough step for me, as I often seem to be doing more wanting than needing, but I’m working on it. Be strict and ensure that what you buy is what you will enjoy and use. Just because it’s a great deal, doesn’t mean you need to buy into it.

2. Create a budget and stick to it

I know I’m stating the obvious, but sticking to a budget will ensure you’re not overspending. Work out how much you can spend and figure out what the priorities are with your spend.

3. Shop around

This is especially important when buying electronics and phones, as you might be able to get a much better deal at a different store. Look around, but also don’t waste too much time otherwise that TV you have your eye on might get snatched.

4. Assess if it’s really a good deal

Sometimes getting “just” 5% and 10% off products might not be worth your Black Friday budget, so look around for bigger wins, and if you really want the deal, then go for it.

5. Buy things you love – but only in your size

It’s tempting to buy that awesome dress that’s less 50%, in a size that’s one down, for when you definitely absolutely and soon lose a few kilograms to fit into it. Don’t do it – it will likely only cause heartache.

6. Check the returns policy

Before you check out, make sure you know what the return/refund policy is, and ensure you’re content with it, if you decide you’re unhappy with your purchase.

7. Keep gift shopping in mind

Black Friday is an opportunity to get some Christmas and teacher’s gifts at reduced prices, so keep that in mind – and budget – too.

8. Follow store activity

While shops might not publish their exact Black Friday specials, they might announce that they’re slashing prices. This prepares you for which site to head to on the day.

Some outlets will also offer lead-up Black Friday specials, so look out for those too.

If you want to keep abreast with what is happening with your favourite stores on Black Friday, sign up to their newsletters, and follow them on social media.

PS: the Superbalist Black Friday Showdown will run from 21 – 28 November and there will be incredible deals on fashion, shoes, accessories, homeware, beauty, grooming and sport.
